Wooden Crates And Pallets: What To Check Before Export

Practical decisions before goods move. Explore supplier coordination, packing, quotations and delivery handovers.

Identify Every Packaging Material

Ask the packer to identify the material used for the crate, pallet, supports and internal bracing. A plywood box can still contain solid-wood runners. ISPM 15 distinguishes raw wood packaging from packaging made wholly from qualifying processed wood. Confirm the actual construction and destination requirements before ordering packaging.

Check The Provider And Marks

For packaging requiring an ISPM 15 mark, ask the packing provider about its authorization and request clear photographs of the actual marks. Keep them linked to the package reference. Do not create or reproduce certification marks yourself. Report reused packaging, repairs or added raw-wood components so the provider can review the completed unit.

Record The Completed Package

Confirm final outer dimensions, gross weight, lifting points and handling instructions after packing. Keep material details and marking photos with the shipment file. Packaging treatment and cargo protection address different risks; an ISPM 15 mark does not establish that a crate supports the cargo safely or that destination clearance is guaranteed.

Worked planning example

A Plywood Crate With Solid-Wood Runners

Situation

The crate panels are plywood, but the base has solid-wood runners and extra timber bracing. Calling the whole package “plywood” leaves those components unidentified.

What To Do

  1. Ask the packer to identify each component and whether the unit is new, reused or repaired.
  2. Have the packaging provider review applicable treatment and marking for the actual construction and destination. Keep clear photos of relevant marks.
  3. After packing, record final size, weight and handling instructions against the package reference.

What To Check Afterwards

The completed record should match the finished unit. Additional supports or later repairs require review; a photograph of an old mark does not describe every component.

Illustrative planning example; quantities are invented, not a customer shipment or a quotation.

Prepare A Wood-Packaging Record

Identify panels, runners, pallets and bracing separately. Keep material details and mark photographs linked to the finished package, including any changes after the first inspection.

This blank record collects packaging evidence. It does not certify ISPM 15 compliance, authorize marking or establish load-bearing strength.

The receiving, checks, packing, charges and release scope are confirmed in writing for each shipment. Visible checks do not establish authenticity or functional performance.
